Some chemicals formed during water disinfection have been linked to cancer in long-term exposure studies.
These include trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. EPA describes research linking certain disinfection byproducts to cancer and other health effects, with uncertainty across studies. The amount and duration of exposure matter.

In two-year National Toxicology Program studies, a chromium-6 compound in drinking water caused mouth tumors in rats and small-intestine tumors in mice. These animal experiments studied high concentrations; they do not measure an individual household’s risk.
